Devnet: Putting Users in Control
Web 2.0 is changing the way people use the web. Content of websites may now be first found away from the website from which it originates. This could be due to links on a blog, search engines, a feed reader (atom, RSS etc) or another content aggregator. The home page of your site will become less and less visited while people travel directly into content specific pages.
A side effect of this, is that the way users find information on your site will continually change. By embracing this web 2.0 development, we can track what people are doing; what pages they are viewing, when they are viewing it etc. By recording what pieces of information are most often visited within our site, we can start to predict what new users will find most relevant when they visit the site, after all, what people have found relevant in the past is likely to be relevant in the future.
By creating a dynamic website, that is continually updating it's navigation based on what other people are doing, we are helping the user get quicker, more targeted and relevant content, straight away. No more time wasting searching for what you need, or what you should read. If everyone else who has visited our site reads a certain page, chances are, you'll want to read it too.
So there you have it, the new Devnet website embraces emergent navigation and content relevancy. Traditional navigation will start to be used less and navigation will come from user behaviour instead.
But don't worry, we know a lot of users out there still might not grasp this idea, although you are sure to find it useful after a few minutes on our site! That is why we have created a balance between the old and new - yes, you can still use traditional navigation to peruse our site. It's the best of both worlds.
Put simply, we are putting you, the user in control. By using our site, you are helping the next visitor find what they want quicker. Better usability. Now that's a good thing.
Enjoy.
